Dear Wolftrap Families,

Can you believe it's already May? Time seems to have flown by this year! Before we know it, we will be welcoming our Wolftrap alums and graduates from area high schools to come and walk our halls one more time! However, we're not quite there yet! We are well into SOL testing in 3-6th grades, which impacts our entire school. We completed the first week and are looking to jump into week 2. There are other projects to complete, and all the learning that comes with them. At Wolftrap, we believe in pushing ourselves until the very last bell rings and being able to enjoy the rites of passage that take us to the next year. After all, growth happens all year long!

Of course, with this final push comes a natural sense of fatigue for everyone. Schedules can feel disrupted, and the pressure of testing can be overwhelming. Let's remember to extend a little extra grace and patience towards each other during this time. A kind word, a helping hand, or simply understanding can make all the difference. I am encouraging the use of calming corners around the building to recenter us, as needed. Please reach out if we can help in any way.

Speaking of appreciation, this week also happens to be Teacher Appreciation Week! You can see a picture here of us last year, enjoying our Wolftrap sunglasses! 😎😎I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to our incredible faculty and staff. Their dedication, passion, and tireless efforts inspire our students every single day. Their impact goes far beyond the classroom walls, shaping young minds and fostering a love of learning. Thank you and thank you to all our families who support our staff!

In the meantime, let's finish this week and month strong – with focus, determination, and of course, a healthy dose of school spirit.

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

We had so many amazing events last week! Thank you to those of you who attended our first author visit from Jennifer Weaver, one of the authors of Raising a Kid Who Can: Simple Strategies to Build a Lifetime of Adaptability and Emotional Strength. We have a copy of the book in our office if anyone is interested. Then, we had our FIRST Battle of the Books with our sixth graders at Colvin Run Elementary School. The team did a great job! Thank you to Ms. Hardin and Ms. Newman who worked with Dr. Grove to coach our team. On Friday, there was the welcome return of World Heritage Night! It was a wonderful event. Ms. O’Donovan and I remain grateful for the support of a vibrant school community.

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time ! Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage. As you may know, the number of kindergarteners impacts our staffing numbers. If you are aware of any families in your neighborhoods who have moved in, please let them know about Wolftrap Kindergarten. You may contact Ms. Caroline Kamel [email protected] in the Wolftrap office. Thank you!

**Don’t forget, Friday, May 3rd is a student holiday!

Our best to you,

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Keep in mind that social and emotional screener results are coming soon. FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher or Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, our Assistant Principal.

Our best to you,

OPTIONAL CLASS PLACEMENT 2024-2025: (DUE TODAY by 5pm! ): As in the past, we welcome your participation as we plan for class assignments. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning abilities. You may complete an optional survey for the upcoming year at THIS LINK.

Due to the many factors we must consider in creating the best possible classroom placement for everyone, requests for specific teachers cannot be honored. Additionally, the form does not ensure that students will or will not be placed with other students. Our teachers and staff will use this information to work on tentative class groupings in June, with classroom assignments finalized in August as the school year approaches. Please submit the electronic form no later than today by 5pm. Late submissions will not be considered. Thanks for continuing to have trust in our school and working together to create the most successful environment for your child(ren) at Wolftrap each year!

WELCOME BACK! Here we are. . . in the home stretch, but we are not done yet! As the last quarter begins, excitement begins to build, alongside that familiar end-of-trip energy. Like a long car ride, even the most enthusiastic students can get a little restless as the destination starts to come into view.

There is much more academic ground to cover in this last quarter. Tests need to be completed, projects finished, and final concepts solidified. We will be working toward our Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning Day on June 3rd.  At Wolftrap, we have a well-established routine to keep learning focused and productive during this final stretch. Teachers will be providing clear expectations and reminders about routines.

Your support at home is crucial too! Taking a few moments to review end-of-year schedules and routines with your child can make a big difference. This will help them stay organized, prepared, and focused on their remaining schoolwork. Together, we can ensure smooth and successful learning during this last quarter.

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal
Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

WALK IN MY SHOES: Please take some time to consider volunteering for this wonderful event. Walk In My Shoes (WIMS) is an all-volunteer run nonprofit organization that develops programs that teach about inclusion, empathy, and accessibility. Ms. Mary Beth Hazelgrove has been organizing this event for the past few years at Wolftrap. She has recently been awarded a SEPTA grant to fund kits for our primary grades. This program is a wonderful way for parents, teachers, counselors, librarians, and other school staff to collaborate to create something meaningful and memorable for the students. The program benefits everyone involved, from the students who learn how they can be more inclusive, to the volunteers get to see important learning happening in front of their eyes. The program is especially meaningful to students with challenges, and uplifts parents whose greatest hope is that their children will feel welcome and safe at school so they may thrive. The event this year is April 8th-12th, and the sign up link is here. Please join us!

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION IS TOMORROW! Do you know anyone who is interested in Kindergarten for next year? Please have the family call the office and inquire about registration and orientation, which is April 2nd at 1:30pm!

DO YOU HAVE USED BIKES IN YOUR GARAGE? We are collecting bikes for a fellow FCPS elementary school. Bring your bikes by Wolftrap until April 11th!

MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD: April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience. Learn more about Month of the Military Child and FCPS’ resources for military families. *We will be celebrating with our PURPLE up day on April 17th! Don’t forget to wear your purple!

NATIONAL ARAB AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH: FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

MUSLIM AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH: Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS: Please note a shift in language that is coming to FCPS. Recently, Dr Reid sent out the following message, and I think it is important to highlight here as well. “Educators and education associations across the nation have begun to instead use terms like “Emergent Bilingual” or “Multilingual Learner.” These “asset-based” terms acknowledge that our students should not be defined by their lack of fluency in English. Instead, we can use language which makes it clear that English fluency is something these students are gaining atop their existing language skills, rather than a deficit they are overcoming. With this in mind, FCPS is shifting our language to “Multilingual Learner” and away from “ESOL student,” “ESL student,” and “Second-language learner.” It’s important to know that “English learner” is still used for demographic data at the state and federal level, so it will continue to be used for some accountability metrics and reporting.” Please let me or Dr. Mona Lohr, our Multilingual Learner specialist, know if we can answer any questions about this shift.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT:  Ms. Shannon Hardin is our librarian at Wolftrap! She loves many things about Wolftrap, but her favorite thing is that everyone truly values kindness. This may come as a surprise, but Ms. Hardin loves to read in her spare time! She has been in education for 13 years, and all those years, even her student teaching, was spent at Wolftrap! She even taught 4th grade with Dr. Grove! We are so excited that she is here. We celebrate Ms. Hardin this month during School Librarian Day on April 4th!!!

MADISON PYRAMID ART SHOW! This event will be held on Thursday, April 18th from 5:30-7pm at Madison High School. Come by and see the art created by our talented pyramid students!

CHECK OUT the spring newsletter from the AAP office. Please let Samira Newman know if you have any questions!

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Have you been by Wolftrap to check on the Lost and Found? We will be donating all items that have been left behind on Friday, March 22nd (right before Spring Break). Please come by and see if something belongs to your family. Thank you!

We hope that everyone has a restful and happy Spring Break! Be on the lookout after the break for the class placement survey that comes out every year.

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal
Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

Take the Family Engagement Survey Today! If you haven’t already, please take FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey today! Survey results will help us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey is available in 10 languages. Please check your email for a message from FCPS partner, K12 Insight, with a link to the survey or access the survey now. Your voice matters!

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

PRINCIPAL EVALUATION: TODAY, Wolftrap parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. I wanted to make you aware, so you did not suspect SPAM on that occasion.

Spring Break: March 25-29 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break! In addition, April 1 and 2 are student holidays, so we will welcome students back on April 3. See the complete school year calendar

STAFF SPOTLIGHT:  Have you met Samira Newman, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART)? Samira thinks our community really embodies the ONE kind initiative the Madison Pyramid encourages. She has always thought of Wolftrap as her second home, and the staff, students and families as an extension of her family. Ms. Newman is a product of FCPS schools. She attended four different FCPS elementary schools - London Town, Deer Park, Spring Hill, Forestville. We are glad she landed at Wolftrap!

FCPS NEWS: District News/In Case You Missed It (ICYMI): In case you missed it in FCPS This Week, the school division shared updates on the following topics:

  • Take the Family Engagement Survey!
  • Fairfax County’s Funding of the FCPS Budget

Playground Updates

Playground construction is well underway! The PTA is working directly with Dr. Grove and Mrs. O'Donovan on what additional equipment (Benches, shade structures, etc.) can be purchased now that we have costs in hand. Dear Wolftrap Families,

We have a lot going on at and around Wolftrap! Our playground has started construction. Students are having recess on the lower field for the duration of construction, and our wonderful PTA has helped us organize play materials for that area! We look forward to the playground completion at the end of March!

Please help us keep students safe by observing the NO PARKING sign on Talisman. See picture above, where several cars have parked in that zone. Additionally, please DO NOT STAND across from Talisman and let your students exit your car. This is a huge safety issue.  Our staff continues to see this happen, and we need your help in keeping all students safe. Finally, please remember that cars must enter the parking lot from Beulah Road at all times (before, during and after school). Cars should never enter from Talisman. Thank you!

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal
Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

VIRTUAL GATHERING FOR MILITARY CONNECTED FAMILIES: Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) values the unique experiences and perspectives of our military-connected families and students.

Family and School Partnerships invites military-connected parents and guardians to attend a special virtual gathering to connect directly with FCPS staff and community members, learn about valuable resources, and share their experiences within FCPS.

This interactive session will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, from 7-8 p.m. Please register for this event to receive the Zoom link and meeting invitation.

For more information about the gathering and/or military-connected resources, please email Meredith Ayala, Family Partnerships Specialist, Military-Connected Youth & Families, at [email protected] or [email protected].

TESTING SCHEDULE: As you know from the parent notification that went out on 2/29, testing season will be starting soon. Please see our website for the most up to date schedule. Thank you!

Bipartisan Study Finds Virginia Public School Divisions Receive Less Funding per Student Than Other States: The School Board recently adopted FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget. Meeting budget needs becomes more of a challenge with underfunding by the state, using staffing formulas that continue to result in school districts not receiving the actual support needed for excellent public education. A staffing formula is the method for calculating the number of positions that need to be assigned to meet program needs.

Did You Know? In July 2023, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) released a study of Virginia’s K-12 funding formulas. The report found that Virginia school divisions receive less funding per student than the 50-state average, the regional average, and many of Virginia’s neighboring states including West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky. Learn more about the JLARC study. View FCPS’ budget development timeline

Contact your state officials to provide feedback on funding for K-12 education.

Summer Camps and Learning Programs: Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a summer camp for your child with special needs? The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

PRINCIPAL EVALUATION: On Monday, March 18, Wolftrap parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form.

I wanted to make you aware so that you did not suspect SPAM on that occasion.

HELP FOR A FELLOW FCPS SCHOOL: We have been supporting an FCPS school throughout this year. We have recently heard from the principal that homelessness is up 40% since last year. The school collects grocery gift cards to support families, and they need $25 Safeway gift cards. Safeway is within walking distance to the school community, so those cards are best. There is a Safeway in Fairfax and one in McLean, for purchasing cards. If you can help, please bring gift cards to the Wolftrap office. We will continue this effort over the next couple of weeks. THANK YOU!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT:  Have you met Ms. Cara Rubin? She teaches 3rd grade here at Wolftrap! When she came to Wolftrap, she was originally on the 2nd grade team, and she has been honored for her work as a teacher, both by the division and by the Special Education PTA (SEPTA), with her team member, Ms. Kate Piester! Ms. Rubin loves how committed Wolftrap families and staff are for student success! When she is not teaching, you might find Ms. Rubin visiting museums and restaurants in DC.

FCPS NEWS: District News/In Case You Missed It (ICYMI): In case you missed it in FCPS This Week, the school division shared updates on the following topics:

  • Take the Family Engagement Survey!
  • New Regulation on Meditation and Reflection Spaces
  • Solar Eclipse Resources

Read FCPS This Week to learn more about these topics. If you are not already receiving the weekly newsletter, please sign up today.
