Dear Wolftrap Families,

What about this crazy March weather! We are prepared for cold one day, wind the next, and. . . hopefully. . . a warmup coming? Next week, we will have our required Tornado Drill, so you can talk with your students about that upcoming event.

If you have not been in the building recently, part of our celebration for Black History Month included a schoolwide read aloud of How Do you Spell Unfair? This is story of a student who was not included in the National Spelling Bee. Classes read the book and used a Harvard Thinking Routine to respond. Many of these responses are posted around the school. Thank you to our Equity team who researches books and creates the thinking routines for classes to use.

I’m going to keep including the Kindergarten Registration link in the newsletter for a few weeks. If you are not aware, staffing is based on our enrollment. If enrollment decreases, we run the risk of losing staff, so we want to recruit any neighborhood families to register early, if they choose to come to Wolftrap. Thanks for being great ambassadors for our program!

Best,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Megan Tipton, Assistant Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Welcome to March! Read Across America Day: Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. Learn more about Equitable Access to Literacy in this video. The first week in March, we typically celebrate Read Across America week! Please see the flyer to have your children participate each day. There will also be a tracker given out to students who can work toward a free Bundt cake! Thank you to Ms. Hardin for all she does to encourage a love of reading in the library!

MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. We have a robust program at Wolftrap that supports all students. FCPS has updated their website to include valuable information about this process. Please let Dr. Grove or Ms. Tipton know if we can answer any questions about this process.

Fairfax County Public Schools, in partnership with community organizations, will present the 2025 FCPS Family Summit - Beyond Labels: Nurturing a Culture of Belonging. This in-person event will be held on Saturday, March 15th, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at South Lakes High School in Reston. Featuring keynote speakers Drs. Julie Causton and Kristie Pretti-Frontczak, the summit offers breakout sessions on advocating for, supporting, and understanding your student's learning, as well as partnering effectively with schools. Attendees can also explore exhibitor resources, including Assistive Technology, and enjoy a student showcase highlighting student creativity and leadership. Register today and join us in building a more inclusive community!

Once again, please remember not to park along Talisman Road at ARRIVAL and/or DISMISSAL. We have had two incidents in the past week where children came close to moving cars. This is a reminder for the safety of all students at Wolftrap. Unfortunately, this continues to happen, even as Ms. Tipton, other staff and I patrol the area. Thank you for your help.

Best,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Megan Tipton, Assistant Principal

🚀 Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun:

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6. Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes. For more information, see the Summer Learning page.

National School Social Work Week: March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS. **We love Ms. Patrick!!!

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward): Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Many thanks to our PTA for a successful talent show! I am always amazed at the variety of talents our students can show during the evening! I hope you enjoyed our staff act. What we lack in talent, we try to make up for in enthusiasm! We like to apply that same mantra to our upcoming staff volleyball game, as well. 😊 See you there!

As you all know, each year Wolftrap submits a school improvement and innovation plan to FCPS to guide our instruction throughout the year. The instructional council recently met, which is made up of grade level team leads and staff, to review winter testing and progress toward our goals. I am pleased to say that we are making good strides toward our goals as a school, particularly in math. The new reading program, Benchmark Advance, is also guiding teachers and students toward success. I plan to report out on specific results at the next PTA meeting, so join us then!

Along the same lines as math advancement and excellence, please see the item below about the budget and supporting academic growth with algebra by eighth grade. I think it is important to keep you informed of division news, as it directly affect Wolftrap students. Please let me know if you would like to discuss!

Breaking Down the Budget: Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan. Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math. Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters. Learn more about the FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget.

Dear Wolftrap Families,

As you know, I’ve been reminding families to not use Talisman Drive for drop off or pick up. Some of you may be familiar with the popular book by Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation. Haidt writes about promoting independence with children by “experiences in the real world.” One of those experiences is “drive to five,” when school is too far to walk alone. He suggests, “you drop kids off with other kids at a spot that is five minutes away from school. Let them walk that last leg by themselves” (pp. 272-273). This is a great suggestion to support our Safe Routes to School initiative. If you are interested in organizing a group, please let me know, and I’m happy to support the effort! Haidt says that this can reduce traffic congestion at school, so I’m hopeful this could help us at Talisman! Let me know, and let’s work together to keep our kids safe while promoting their independence. I’ve really enjoyed reading this book, so let me know if you would like to discuss.

We are looking forward to a wonderful week!

Protect Yourself from the Flu:

As you all know, we are experiencing a high level of students who have been out sick. Additionally, Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department. The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration (Note Date Change):

FCPS’ Chief Equity Office invites the community to an Inaugural Black History Month Kickoff Celebration on Wednesday, February 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Carter G. Woodson High School.

The event begins with a light reception followed by a formal program, From the Threads of Our Past to the Fabric of Our Future. The program will honor the enduring contributions of Black history and culture while envisioning a future rooted in equity and excellence. It will include inspiring performances, personal stories, reflections, and opportunities to connect and celebrate. The event is open to the entire community. Please join us!

ART TEACHER LOOKING FOR MAGAZINES, OTHER ITEMS!

A message from our art teacher, Anne Engnoth:

Hi, we have a need for (a lot of) magazines in the art room to use for collages. Any magazine will do (please avoid hunting magazines)! We can even use that pesky junk mail.

Also, we can always use empty toilet paper rolls, odds and ends from workbenches or kitchen junk drawers, old costume jewelry, old books, etc. So, if anyone is doing any spring cleaning yet, please keep Art in mind!

Thank you,

Anne Engnoth

Please drop off at the office labeled with Ms. Engnoth's name.

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Although I would like to keep all our Wolftrap students at Wolftrap 😊, I want to make you aware of two upcoming opportunities: Dual Language Immersion Lottery Registration, and Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools Lottery. Countywide lottery registration for the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program for first graders in the 2025-26 school year is open through Thursday, February 13, at 4 p.m. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program through Thursday, March 6, at 4 p.m.  Dual Language Immersion is available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Interested parents/caregivers may attend an informational meeting at the school site. Visit the Dual Language Immersion Program registration page for a list of meetings by language offered. Get more details on the DLI Program webpage. Also, you have an opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools. Three FCPS elementary magnet schools — Hunters Woods, Bailey’s Primary, and Bailey’s Upper — provide enhanced learning programs in science, technology, and performing arts. Registration for the 2025-26 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 4, through Friday, April 4. Learn more about the programs on the Elementary Magnet Schools page and information on the magnet lottery on our Registration page.

Please let me know if I can assist or answer any questions about these opportunities. We are looking forward to a wonderful week!

Dear Wolftrap Families,

We are well on the way to the third quarter of school! We had a wonderful Drop Everything and Reflect day, where students across the school stopped to study Quarter 2 work and choose items for portfolios that illustrated their work toward a Portrait of a Graduate goal. We are so excited to invite the community to Wolftrap to hear about our progress at the end of the school year!

Reminder: We are friends with a school in Reston who has recently put out a call for 25$ gift cards from Safeway for families in need. Families can easily walk to Safeway, so it is the preferred gift card. If you are moved to help, please drop those gift cards to the Wolftrap office, and we will get them to our friends. Thank you so much for considering this way to support those in our community.

We are looking forward to a wonderful week!

Safety Update: Booster for cell service on Feb 4th!

I am excited to announce that we will have cell service boosters installed on February 4th. I’m hopeful that these boosters will help cell service become more reliable throughout the building. This reliable service would help those visiting the school to log onto the network and help phones work in all areas of the building.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Wolftrap Elementary:

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 24, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

View 2nd Quarter Progress Reports:

Progress reports will be viewable on SIS ParentVUE accounts on Tuesday February 4th. If you have any trouble accessing this information, please let the office know. Thank you!

It focuses on competitive compensation, including a 7.0% salary increase for all staff to recruit and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students; investing in students who require additional support; and continuing multiyear initiatives such as inclusive preschool and safety and security updates. Learn more on the Budget webpage

Virtual Community Boundary Review Meeting:

If you have not been able to attend an FCPS Community Boundary Review meeting yet, it’s not too late! The last virtual meeting will have the same format and information available as the previous in-person meetings:

Each virtual meeting will be capped at 400 participants to help provide a meaningful experience for all. Language interpretation will be available. Learn about FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Dear Wolftrap Families,

It has been an adventurous beginning to 2025 with late starts and snow cancellations! As always, our Wolfies and the staff persevere! Thank you for your patience as we navigate the cold weather. We bid farewell to our South Korean teacher interns and friends last week. What fun it was to host them and learn about school in South Korea as well.

A school in Reston has recently put out a call for $25 gift cards from Safeway for families in need. Families from that school can easily walk to Safeway, so those are the best gift cards to purchase. If you are moved to help, please drop the gift cards at the Wolftrap office, and we will get them to our friends. Thank you so much for considering this way to support those in our community.

We are looking forward to a wonderful week!

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Megan Tipton, Assistant Principal

Have you visited our website lately?

Our SBTS, Sara Clark, has added important information to the Wolftrap website. Please peruse soon! Here is a sample, with updated Special Education information.

Drop Everything And Reflect! Quarter 2:

Every K-6 student at Wolftrap takes some time at the end of the quarter to assess what skills have been improved. Teachers lead a lesson to help students think deeply about their learning and why that those skills are important. Make sure that you take some time on Tuesday to talk to your children about what they have accomplished this quarter.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse:

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive. What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
  • Get more information on opioid awareness.

Virtual Community Boundary Review Meeting:

If you have not been able to attend an FCPS Community Boundary Review meeting yet, it’s not too late! The following virtual meetings will have the same format and information available as the previous in-person meetings:

Click one of the dates above to register and receive your unique Zoom link. Each virtual meeting will be capped at 400 participants to help provide a meaningful experience for all. Language interpretation will be available. Learn about FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Virginia's Student Assessment Summary for Families:

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.  Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE. The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Rising 7th Graders!

It’s hard to believe we are thinking about our sixth graders moving on to middle school! For more information about the course registration timeline and to access the Kilmer Middle School Course Catalog, please visit the Course Registration page on our Kilmer website. If you have any questions about the course registration process or curriculum events, please contact Sarah Groh, Director of Student Services, at [email protected].

Dear Wolftrap Families,

As you know, we are expecting some of the coldest weather of the season this week! Please remember, make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. We monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education. You can also visit Fairfax County’s website for Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our family liaison, Ms. Azita Behdad at Wolftrap. You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

We are looking forward to a wonderful week!
