Second Grade Updates

See what happened in Second Grade this month.

September was a very busy month. We worked hard to learn new routines related to classroom and school rules, the various subject areas and our Specials’ classes.

Language Arts

In October, we  will begin writing Personal Narratives. Our goals for this writing unit is to be able to  use strategies to independently generate meaningful stories ,use elaboration techniques to develop important parts of their small moment and share our pieces, receive feedback, and begin to use the feedback to revise. In Reading, we will learn that readers follow characters, developing ideas about how and why characters grow and change throughout a book.

Math

We have finished our first Unit on Counting and Fluency to 20. We worked with two digit numbers and learned to skip count, identify odd and even numbers and ordinal numbers. We also learned a variety of strategies to help us master addition and subtraction facts  to and from 20 and improve our math fact fluency. This month students continue to count and compare quantities, and work with place value concepts including rounding. Students also apply their knowledge of patterns to extend their understanding of our base-ten number system.

Social Studies

In our next unit students will develop map skills by using globes and maps of the world and the United States.

Science

This month we will conclude our study of life cycles and living and nonliving concepts from part one of our “Monarchs, Milkweed and Mexico” unit.

Health

In October, students will learn about body systems, structures and consequences for not taking care of our body systems.
