First Grade Updates

See what's happening in First Grade this Month

 

First Grade Monthly Update September:
 

Reading: We are finishing up our current unit on building a community of readers.  We will begin our next unit shortly which will focus on the characters in books. We will look at the pictures and words to develop ideas about characters throughout the story to form personal connections with the characters.

 

Writing: We are finishing up our unit on building a community of writers and we will begin to learn about personal narratives. Students will get a chance to learn about writing by sharing personal experiences.   

 

Science: We are beginning our science unit learning about how to be a good scientist.  We are focusing on asking questions, making observations, and sharing ideas. 


Social Studies: We have been focusing on citizenship and learning how our choices and behavior affects those around us.  We will then move on to our unit about present day Virginians where we will learn about how VIrginia is made up of diverse groups of people and that diversity is reflected in the food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation in the state.

 

Math: We are finishing up our unit of counting forwards and backwards to 30. We will be starting our next unit covering addition and subtraction problems with sums to 10. We will learn strategies for solving equations and learn about the equal sign and the concept of equality.
