Dear Wolftrap Families,

Welcome to our first full week of school for the 2025 new year! Hey, have you checked out the Ten Ways that Wolftrap will WOW you ?? Ms. Sara Clark, our new SBTS, has been helping to update our website, and this is some of the wonderful new content that has been included. Check it out!

Thank you all for your help in keeping Talisman clear on Friday. Please continue to support us in that effort to keep students and staff safe. I also ask that you continue to send students to school dressed for the conditions. Our hope is that we have classes go outside regularly. It may not be on the playground, if the ice and snow are still an issue, but it could be for a walk down the sidewalk. If you have any questions, please let me know.

We are looking forward to a wonderful week!

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Megan Tipton, Assistant Principal

WELCOMING TEACHER INTERNS TO WOLFTRAP!

I am excited to announce that Wolftrap will be welcoming three student teachers from Seoul National University in South Korea during the weeks of January 15th and 20th. These aspiring educators will be observing and assisting teachers in three classrooms at Wolftrap during this short time and gaining valuable insights into the teaching methods and the vibrant learning environment that Wolftrap fosters.  This unique opportunity not only benefits the interns, but also enriches our school community by providing different perspectives and fostering international educational exchange. The student teachers will be supervised by esteemed professors from their university, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for all involved. Those classrooms that are directly impacted will receive a letter from me this week.

Dear Wolftrap Families,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! HAPPY SNOW DAYS! ❄️❄️❄️❄️ What fun to have some time at the end of the winter break to celebrate the snow! The last time this happened was in 2022, so I hope your family had some time to ease back into the routine.

Speaking of routines, if you have not started to get those school bed times back into practice, this week would be great time to get school routines established again. Please let our clinical team know if we can assist with this process.

** 📴📱📱Some students will return to Wolftrap with lovely watches and phones after the break. Please remember to review the SRR guidelines with students. In elementary schools, phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. If your child is not feeling well, please remind them to let an adult know and proceed to the clinic. For safety and security, students should not contact parents directly, via phones or watches and request that parents pick them up from school. The office or clinic will reach out to parents via our office phones, with such information. Please reach out the administrative team if you have any questions.

GRADING UPDATES

Want to hear more about grades and progress reports? Plan to stop by the next PTA meeting for an update. Did you know?

  • The comments that teachers include come from a “bank” of comments. Teachers are not able to enter their own comments into the progress report and are restricted by what is provided from the system.
  • Teachers do not have the ability to change names in the comment bank. So, while your child’s teacher knows the names (and nicknames) of all students, that is not reflected in the comments (for example, Kate, instead of Katherine)! That makes the comments more “formal” than they might be if teachers write them.
  • Teachers are not provided pronouns to use, so every comment must begin with the child’s name (this can also seem strange when reading the report!).
UPDATE ON POTENTIAL CHANGES TO MIDDLE SCHOOL START TIMES!

⏰🔔⏰🔔 I think it is important that all of you are informed about the discussion on Middle School Start Times, which don’t just affect Middle School! At Tuesday’s School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc., presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.

The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent. Watch a video of the work session. Visit the Middle School Start Times webpage for more information on the project.

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Please don’t forget the last Boundary Review Community Meeting this week! Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place (WEDNESDAY) on Wednesday, December 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at Madison High School Cafeteria. Please register in advance by clicking on the date. Language interpretation will be available. If you are unable to attend on this date, view the full list of meetings on the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage

Winter Break starts this Friday (in case you were not aware 😊), and we would like to wish all of you a wonderful break. As mentioned at Thanksgiving, we take these opportunities to remind our staff at each long break the need to give our students (and themselves) a respite from schoolwork during the holiday. While teachers may have long-term assignments that span over the course of a break, we have shared with the staff to not assign homework, projects, essays, etc. to be specifically done over the break.

All of us need the opportunity to spend time with our families and friends. We want our students to have the opportunity to catch a breath from schoolwork and to enjoy time with friends and family. We also want our teachers to decompress and put their lesson plan books and laptops away for a few days to enjoy time with their friends and family. Our goal is to have students and teachers return to school anxiety-free without the pressure of looming deadlines. This is a unified message that Madison pyramid principals send to all of you. Ms. Tipton and I wish you a wonderful time together with family and friends! See you next year!

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal
Ms. Megan Tipton, Assistant Principal

CONCERT UPDATES

We are excited to welcome many of you to Band and Strings concerts this week. The evening programs are designed primarily for families, and the daytime concerts are designed primarily for students and staff. If you are able, please plan to attend in the evening, as we often do not have enough seating and room for additional concert goers during the day. If you need a specific accommodation, please call the Wolftrap office or send Dr. Grove an email, and we will be happy to assist. Thank you for your help!

2024 TEACHER AND STAFF GIFTING MADE EASY!

We know that the Holiday Season can be busy and stressful. As a convenience to families, the PTA has organized an EASY and PERSONALIZED way for families to make our WES Staff’s Holiday Season SUPER special. And not just that, you are giving the staff exactly what they want: the ability to choose their own gift! Click here to access the Wolftrap Elementary Holiday Gifting Page.

We'd love to recognize our classroom teachers as well as any additional staff members using this platform (specials and electives teachers, custodial staff, cafeteria staff, administrative staff, etc.). This gift giving platform allows users to include a personal greeting and also allows staff to choose how to redeem their gifts.

Step by step instructions for how to give can be found in the membership toolkit on the PTA website. Please note that gift recipients will only be able to see the names of their contributors and any greeting sent as well as the total amount received. Individual contribution amounts will not be shown.

As always, gift giving is completely optional, and there are many ways we can thank our teachers, so if a homemade card, drawing or other small token makes more sense for your family, please do not hesitate to do that!

The gift collection ends on December 18th at 9:00 p.m. ET. At that time, gifts will be sent to their respective recipients.
