Dear Wolftrap Families,

Throughout February, we'll be honoring the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. Look forward to special activities, classroom discussions, and hallway displays recognizing this month. Our Equity team has been identifying a book study for our school to highlight diversity each quarter.

For 2nd quarter, every class enjoyed reading the beautiful book "My Name is a Story" by Ashanti. This heartwarming story sparked creativity, and students had the opportunity to craft their own unique name poems, based on the books. For 3rd quarter, we are reading about Ramadan and will be sending out the title when our committee has voted.

100th Day of School: Mark your calendars for February 8th! This is a great day for elementary school students! The other day, I had a class of Kinder students count by 10s to 100 for me. It’s an exciting time! 😊

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal
Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

After a long drought, we enjoyed TWO whole snow days last week, and now we move into a short week with the end of the 2nd quarter on Thursday.

We are so excited to be working with all students (K-6) this week to reflect on how each one has grown over the course of the quarter, particularly in Portrait of a Graduate skills. Did you know that each grade level is focusing on a skill more deeply? If you are not sure what your child’s focus is, please touch base with your child and your child’s teacher!

At the end of each quarter, students reflect on their work as a communicator, collaborator, ethical and global citizen or another skill. Teachers will use questions, such as the ones on the illustration below, to facilitate reflection. We are excited about how this work will help our Wolftrap citizens grow as they advance in their educational career. Wonderful things are happening at Wolftrap!

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal
Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse: FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive. What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Despite the weather, I hope that you and your family were able to reach out in service to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. I’m always moved by his words about love and light driving out darkness and hate. I believe that first steps toward that light are working in community and service for each other.

I hope you had a happy snow day!! If you have not heard, there will be some frigid weather this week! 😊 A reminder that we plan on having recess during cold days. Please make sure that your child comes to school appropriately ready for time outside during recess. There are common sense factors that we consider when playing outdoors, including wind chill, sunshine and the length of time spent outdoors. Recess is typically 30 minutes, but it may be shortened in the event of wind chill advisories or warnings. Regardless, please make sure your child is bundled up because we will most likely venture outside! If students are not appropriately dressed for very cold weather (including shorts), teachers may elect to have that student stay inside. Thank you for your help.

Our best to you,

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Lisa O’Donovan, Assistant Principal

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Ms. Stephanie Tise teaches fourth grade at Wolftrap. She has been a teacher for 10 years, 7 of those at Wolftrap! Ms. Tise loves the strong community at Wolftrap that extends throughout our school and community. She enjoys Saturday, when she can snuggle with the dog and have a good cup of coffee. Her dream job was to be an artist in France. While she has not become an artist, YET, we are “très joyeux” to have her at Wolftrap.
